Claus Böhmler
Typogramme

The sound and media artist Claus Böhmler (1939-2017) called himself a media researcher. He was among the first artists in Germany interested in using that era's media as raw- and research material for their art, and in the changes in sensory perception that accompanied these media.

The exhibition at the Drawing Room, Hamburg and the accompanying catalogue both concentrate on Böhmler's series of Schriftbilder (drawings with text) he created in 1968 using the Din A4 format. In these critical and humorous Typograms he examined the important aspect of language's effectiveness as a medium of visual communication, and used the typewriter as a drawing instrument.

The catalogue is published in conjunction with the exhibition 'Claus Böhmler, TYPOGRAMME – Schreibmaschine' at the Drawing Room, Hamburg. Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, 2021.
